Drosera capensis, commonly known as the Cape Sundew, is one of the most popular and beginner-friendly carnivorous plants. Native to South Africa, it features long, slender green or reddish leaves covered in glistening, sticky tentacles that attract and trap insects. Once prey is caught, the leaf slowly curls inward to aid digestion, absorbing nutrients that help the plant thrive in nutrient-poor soil.
This sundew thrives in bright, direct to indirect sunlight and prefers consistently moist conditions using distilled, rain, or reverse osmosis water. It grows well in a mix of sphagnum moss and perlite or sand, and does not require fertilization—its appetite for insects takes care of that. In the right conditions, Drosera capensis will flower frequently, producing tall stalks of delicate pink or purple blooms.
Fast-growing, highly adaptable, and endlessly fascinating to observe, Drosera capensis is an excellent choice for carnivorous plant enthusiasts of all experience levels.
