Hoya linearis is a graceful and unique epiphytic vine native to the Himalayan forests of Nepal, China, and India, prized for its long, slender, soft green leaves that drape in delicate cascades. Its trailing habit and fine-textured foliage make it a standout in hanging baskets or mounted displays. When in bloom, it produces clusters of fragrant, white, star-shaped flowers with a soft lemon scent, typically appearing from late summer through fall.
Despite its delicate appearance, Hoya linearis is relatively low-maintenance when provided with the right conditions. It thrives in bright, indirect light and prefers to be shielded from harsh direct sun, which can scorch its leaves. Ideal temperatures range between 15–29°C, with a preference for cooler nights, and it performs best in moderate to high humidity around 50–70%.
The plant should be grown in a well-draining mix, such as orchid bark blended with perlite and compost. Water thoroughly when the top couple of inches of soil are dry—typically once a week during the growing season and every 2–3 weeks in cooler months. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot, and watch for signs of underwatering like leaf thinning or shriveling.
Fertilize lightly every 2–3 weeks during spring and summer with a balanced fertilizer to support healthy growth and blooming. Hoya linearis enjoys being slightly root-bound and only needs repotting every one to two years in spring. Propagation is easy through stem cuttings rooted in water or sphagnum moss.
With its cascading foliage, fragrant blooms, and soft, trailing texture, Hoya linearis is a favorite among collectors and adds an elegant, airy feel to any indoor plant collection.
