Mouse Tail Cactus (Rhipsalis baccifera subsp. horrida) is a distinctive and easy-care trailing cactus, perfect for hanging baskets or as a cascading accent indoors. Originating mainly from Madagascar and parts of Central and South America, this species belongs to the “jungle cactus” group and prefers more humidity and indirect light compared to typical desert cacti. Its slender, green stems are about 5–7mm thick and taper to a point—resembling a mouse’s tail—with rusty bristles that can turn red when exposed to sun, stress, or drought.

Mouse Tail Cactus grows in graceful clusters, with stems that can reach 20 inches (50cm) or more in length. The tips may develop a reddish hue in higher light or drier conditions. Small, elegant, white flowers may appear and are sometimes followed by white or translucent berries, adding to the airy, whimsical look that makes this cactus well-suited for trailing displays or shelf mounting.

This plant thrives in bright, indirect light; too much direct sun can scorch the stems, while deep shade limits growth. A couple of hours of gentle morning sun are fine, but harsh midday rays should be avoided. Mouse Tail Cactus prefers room temperatures above 50°F (10°C) and adapts to most household humidity, thriving in places like bathrooms or kitchens. Use a well-draining, slightly acidic potting mix—two parts peat moss, one part sand, and some bark chips for extra drainage works well.

Let the soil dry out between waterings. During its active growing season (spring to late summer), water deeply but let excess water drain fully. In winter, reduce watering—just enough to keep the stems from shriveling, as growth slows. Overwatering is rarely fatal in the short term, but chronic sogginess can cause root rot. Feed with a balanced, diluted cactus or houseplant fertilizer every 2–4 weeks during the growing season.

Maintenance is straightforward: prune in spring to shape or control stem length, and use clean tools for trimming. Repot the plant only when it outgrows its pot, typically every 2–3 years. Propagation is easy by dividing clumps or rooting stem cuttings—let cut ends dry for a day before planting them in soil.

Generally pest-resistant, Mouse Tail Cactus can occasionally encounter mealybugs or root rot if neglected, but it is overall a resilient and adaptable plant. With its unique trailing stems and forgiving nature, Mouse Tail Cactus makes a great, low-maintenance addition to any indoor plant collection, whether you’re a beginner or an experienced gardener.
