Gasteria is a genus of slow-growing, succulent plants native to South Africa, known for their thick, fleshy leaves arranged in rosettes or fan-like patterns. The leaves are typically dark green with varying degrees of speckling, mottling, or striping in white, gray, or light green—giving each species a distinct and ornamental appearance. Some have smooth leaves, while others may be rough or textured with bumpy surfaces.
Most Gasteria species produce tubular, bell-shaped flowers in shades of coral, pink, or orange on tall, arching stalks—earning the genus its name from the Latin word gaster, meaning “stomach,” a reference to the flowers' swollen bases.
These hardy succulents thrive in bright, indirect light and prefer a gritty, well-draining soil mix. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Gasteria tolerate lower light than many other succulents, making them ideal for indoor environments. With their sculptural leaves and ease of care, Gasteria species are perfect for windowsills, dish gardens, and compact succulent arrangements.
