Caudex plants, also known as caudiciform plants, are known to evolve into fat and enlarged stem trunks with above-ground root systems. Some hobbyists describe them as fat plants or fat-bottomed plants. The swollen stems and trunks in these plants are utilized for holding water and storing food to allow them to survive for prolonged cycles of time devoid of water or access to normal levels of nutrition. They are undoubtedly intriguing and odd specimens for any plant collection.
