It features a nearly spherical body when young, gradually becoming more cylindrical with age. The plant is ribbed with soft vertical lines and subtle variegation in shades of green, gray, and purple. Small yellow-green flowers appear at the crown on mature specimens during the growing season.

This species prefers bright, indirect to full sun and should be grown in a gritty, well-draining soil mix designed for cacti and succulents. Water sparingly—allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, especially in winter when the plant enters dormancy.
